TV Turn-off Week
It's Spring! Time to turn off the TV and head outside! This week (April 24-30) was designated by the Allegheny Health Department and TV Turn-off Network as a week to turn off the tube and find healthier, more creative ways to spend time. Their suggestions of TV alternatives include indoor and outdoor activities, family meals, art projects, and much more.
To see a list of events scheduled for the rest of this week, click here.
One more reason to get outside...
Why watch life when you can experience it?

Explorer's Club and White Rocks
The purchase price of White Rocks is nearly $725,000 dollars, and the Explorer's Club, in partnership with the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) and the Pennsylvania Game Commission, has secured all but $85,000! They must show that they can raise that money in the very near future or they will lose this once-in-a-lifetime chance! When the purchase of White Rocks is complete:
· Over 800 acres will be put into public trust
· Mining and drilling will be prohibited
· Critical environmental habitat will be protected
· Rock climbing, hiking, hunting, fishing are just a few of the recreational opportunities that will be available to the public
All contributions are being collected through the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy and are tax-deductible. Please make the most generous donation you can. And thank you!

Garlic Mustard Hike
Weeds! Invasive Plants! Bet you've seen them, but have you eaten them? Take a hike and learn about plant pests like Garlic Mustard a fast spreading invasive that even deer won't eat because it's too spicy. But guess what...it's a great ingredient for stir-fry and other tasty dishes! We'll explore Boyce-Mayview Park in Upper St. Clair for its plant pests, find out how and why they got here, and enjoy a leisurely stroll through the woods and fields. Afterward, we'll sample some homemade dishes that use wild edibles.
Location: Boyce-Mayview Park
Time: 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM
Cost: $12.00 member/$15.00 non-member
Saturday, May 6
Rock Climbing
Imagine the feeling of using your own two hands and feet to pull yourself up the side of a cliff. Rock climbing is becoming a popular outdoor sport; it’s great for strength and confidence building. After a short hike over easy terrain, we will learn about equipment, safety, how to belay, and some of the necessary knots. Afterwards, we'll do some climbing and hopefully get in some rappelling! A variety of climbs will be set up so that even inexperienced participants (or even those who are afraid of heights) can experience success. This is a beginner's class and no experience is necessary.
Location: Cooper's Rock State Forest
Time: 9:30 AM - 4:00 PM
Cost: $45.00 member/$55.00 non-member
Wednesday, May 10
Happy Hour Paddle
This is the perfect way to get over the "hump" of the work week. Instead of sitting in traffic you can enjoy the stress free flat waters of the Allegheny River. This moderately paced paddle will take you on the water for an hour-long guided tour. After the paddle there is no need to rush home, we will stop by one of the local establishments near PNC Park for a round of specially priced drinks and munchies. Beginner instructions not included, check out our Beginner Paddle.
Location: Kayak Pittsburgh: under the 6th Street bridge
Time: 5:15 PM - 6:30 PM
Cost: $10.00 member/$15.00 non-member

In addition to the physical activities, there will be kids' activities and tours of the river on the discovery vessel, the Pittsburgh Voyager. PUZZLER ANSWERS: (information found at KidsHealth.org)
1. True, Health experts have long linked excessive TV-watching to obesity - a significant health problem today. While watching TV, children are inactive and tend to snack. They're also bombarded with advertising messages that encourage them to eat unhealthy foods such as potato chips and empty-calorie soft drinks that often become preferred snack foods.
2. False, AAP guidelines state that children under 2 should have no "screen time". They also state that children over two years of age should only watch 1 to 2 hours of quality TV programming a day, where the actual average is 4 hours a day.
3. False, 70% of child care centers are using TV on a normal basis.
