It's the end of the year and time to look back on 2006. It was a great year for Venture Outdoors...with a lot of change and growth. The staff and board of Venture Outdoors thank each of our volunteers, members, donors, partners and participants for their help in bettering VO and the Pittsburgh Region. Reminisce with us and look forward to an even better 2007!

Venture Outdoors Member Joins Climb For Hope
Laura Willumsen of Pittsburgh has joined the Climb for Hope expedition which is raising money for breast cancer research by climbing Cotopaxi, the highest active volcano in Ecuador (19,500'), to raise funds that will be directed toward a vaccine being developed at Johns Hopkins University.
Climb for Hope

The Climb for Hope was created by Andrew Buerger of Baltimore whose sister has late-stage cancer. He and twenty other climbers are raising a minimum of $5,000 each by the end of December. The climb takes place from January 4 - 13, 2007 and will be led by Chris Warner, a veteran mountaineer who has summited Mt. Everest and K2 among many others.

To find out more about Climb for Hope and to make a donation, go to www.climbforhope.org.

Changes in Fall Musky Stocking
Waterways around PA will see an increase in musky stockings in the near future. The PA Fish and Boating Commission would like input from anglers about the changes. You can take the survey here, or for more information, please visit www.fishandboat.com.

Job/Volunteer Postings
Venture Outdoors is exploring the establishment of a Venture Crew to provide programming & experiences for youth ages 14-20. There is a gathering planned on the early evening of Friday, December 29th to flesh out the idea and determine how to proceed... If you know of any young men or women who might be interested, please have them contact VO Executive Director Erik Lingren at elingren@ventureoutdoors.org or by calling 412-255-0564 x22 for more details on the exact time and location. PUZZLER ANSWERS: Germany in the early 16th century. The tradition can be traced back to the Ancient Egyptians, who filled their homes with green palms leaves during the winter solstice, and the early Romans, who decorated their homes and temples with evergreen boughs and feasted during the winter solstice. However, it is believed that Martin Luther, the 16th century Protestant reformer, first added lights to a tree and began the Christams tree tradition as we know it today.
