It's the end of the year and time to look back on 2006. It was a great year for Venture
Outdoors...with a lot of change and growth. The staff and board of Venture
Outdoors thank each of our volunteers, members, donors, partners and
participants for their help in bettering VO and the Pittsburgh Region. Reminisce
with us and look forward to an even better 2007!

Martin Luther King Jr. Day in the Park
Venture Outdoors is in need of volunteer support for Martin Luther King Jr. Day in the Park on Monday, January 15, 2007
at Schenley Park Ice Rink. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is a joint effort undertaken by numerous local partners.
Our co-sponsor for this event is the Student Conservation Association. Supporting partners include: Citiparks, Dominion,
and Pittsburgh Center for the Arts. Volunteer duties would include registration, ice skating, sledding, set-up,
and art activities. Lunch will be provided and volunteer shifts begin at 11AM. To sign up,

Venture Outdoors Member Joins Climb For Hope
Laura Willumsen of Pittsburgh has joined the Climb for Hope expedition which is
raising money for breast cancer research by climbing Cotopaxi, the highest active
volcano in Ecuador (19,500'), to raise funds that will be directed toward a vaccine being
developed at Johns Hopkins University.

The Climb for Hope was created by Andrew Buerger of Baltimore
whose sister has late-stage cancer. He and twenty other
climbers are raising a minimum of $5,000 each by the end
of December. The climb takes place from January 4 - 13, 2007 and will
be led by Chris Warner, a veteran mountaineer who has summited
Mt. Everest and K2 among many others.

Changes in Fall Musky Stocking
Waterways around PA will see an increase in musky stockings in the near future. The PA Fish and Boating
Commission would like input from anglers about the changes. You can take the survey

PUZZLER ANSWERS: Germany in the early 16th century. The tradition
can be traced back to the Ancient Egyptians, who filled their homes with green palms leaves
during the winter solstice, and the early Romans, who decorated their homes and temples with
evergreen boughs and feasted during the winter solstice. However, it is believed that Martin
Luther, the 16th century Protestant reformer, first added lights to a tree and began the
Christams tree tradition as we know it today. (
