VI. What's Goin' On?

The Allegheny Conference would like to know:
What is your opinion of Pittsburgh?
Let 'em know what you think! Take one of the following surveys:
http://www.alleghenyconference.org/pghcsur.htm (for residents and non-residents)
http://www.alleghenyconference.org/pghbsur.htm (for business leaders living OUTSIDE the region who are responsible for deciding where to locate their businesses)

1. Trail Mix - Don't Get Bugged about Mayflies
Welcome to Trail Mix, a Zip-lock bagful of VO-related fun facts, links and puzzlers, served up fresh with every issue of Contours. Look for helpful information on everything outdoors along with other interesting tidbits that enhance your awareness and well-being (and your funny bone too).

They're pesky...
They swarm the bright lights at Pirates' games, clog up industrial air intake systems, and are just nuisances. However, this June will mark only the 5th consecutive year that mayflies have inhabited the Pittsburgh Area in almost 150 years!

In the past, Pittsburgh's waterways have not been known for being clean, but now they serve as the economic engine for the city. They provide recreation for boaters and fishermen, the scenery for numerous parks, trails, apartment buildings, and stadiums, and are a symbol of pride for everyone from the city. Pittsburghers, however, are not the only ones that have noticed the improving water conditions.

But some nuisances are good...
Mayflies, in their adult form, which is the small, white, flying insect that we've all seen swarmed around streetlights on warm summer nights, only live for about 24 hours. They live as aquatic nymphs in fresh water for around 2 years before taking to the air. The nymphs are very sensitive to pollution and therefore can only survive in optimal water conditions. These insects shouldn't be looked at as annoying pests, but instead should be greeted as ambassadors of Pittsburgh's improved waterways.

Puzzler - True or False? (see answers at the bottom of this email)
1. Mayflies are used by fishermen as bait.
2. Adult Mayflies eat for most of their lives.

2. You are Invited...
...to Celebrate 5 great years!

Explorer's Club and White Rocks
The purchase price of White Rocks is nearly $725,000 dollars, and the Explorer's Club, in partnership with the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) and the Pennsylvania Game Commission, has secured all but $85,000! They must show that they can raise that money in the very near future or they will lose this once-in-a-lifetime chance! When the purchase of White Rocks is complete:
· Over 800 acres will be put into public trust
· Mining and drilling will be prohibited
· Critical environmental habitat will be protected
· Rock climbing, hiking, hunting, fishing are just a few of the recreational opportunities that will be available to the public
All contributions are being collected through the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy and are tax-deductible. Please make the most generous donation you can. And thank you!

PUZZLER ANSWERS: 1. True. They are used as bait for trout in cold water and bass and catfish in warm water. Try fishing yourself and see the bait first-hand at our Fly Fishing Intro course at Ohiopyle State Park on Saturday, June 17th, and check this link for more fly fishing information.
2. False. After becoming an adult, a mayfly's main goal is reproduction so its digestive system shuts off. Within 24 hours, it mates, lays its eggs in freshwater, and dies.
