Trail Mix - Krazy for Kayaks
Welcome to Trail Mix, a Zip-lock bagful of VO-related fun facts, links and puzzlers,
served up fresh with every issue of Contours. Look for helpful information on everything outdoors
along with other interesting tidbits that enhance your awareness and well-being (and your funny bone too).
So many to choose from...
Did you know that there are many different kinds of kayaks? Depending on the kind of kayaking you
prefer, there's a kayak out there to meet your needs.
The kind of kayak you want depends on a few factors:
1. The kind of boating you will be doing
2. Your experience as a paddler
3. Portability and weight
4. Passenger/Cargo capacity and comfort
5. Initial and final stability
6. Controllability
7. Available Options
8. Price
(Information derived from Kayak Online)
The kind of kayaks we have at Kayak
Pittsburgh have rigid structures, which are perfect for flatwater
kayaking. They are very stable, easy for beginners, and come in
both solo and tandem (double-seater) varieties.
Visit one of our local outfitters for more information.

2. Venture Outdoors Festival - Thank You!
Wrapping up...
We crossed our fingers (and toes) and lucked out with some fantastic weather for the 6th Annual Venture Outdoors Festival. In spite of an early morning chill and windy conditions, 5,000 people turned out to enjoy 100 different vendors, exhibitors and fun, free activities.
We would like to extend a special thanks to our sponsors:
UPMC Health Plan,
Sportsman's Warehouse,
SoBe,
DCNR,
WYEP,
Mountain Dreams,
Gatto Cycle and Fitness
and all of the exhibitors, vendors and over 100 dedicated volunteers! We could not have done it without you. Thank you for making the festival such a success.

Explorer's Club and White Rocks
The purchase price of White Rocks is nearly $725,000 dollars, and the Explorer's Club, in partnership with the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) and the Pennsylvania Game Commission, has secured all but $85,000! They must show that they can raise that money in the very near future or they will lose this once-in-a-lifetime chance! When the purchase of White Rocks is complete:
· Over 800 acres will be put into public trust
· Mining and drilling will be prohibited
· Critical environmental habitat will be protected
· Rock climbing, hiking, hunting, fishing are just a few of the recreational opportunities that will be available to the public
All contributions are being collected through the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy and are tax-deductible. Please make the most generous donation you can. And thank you!
