YOAP's Impact in the Community
The Youth Outdoor Adventure Program (YOAP) impacted 1,884 participants from January 1 to November 1 through excursions such as biking, caving, fishing, kayaking, canoeing, geocaching, fishprinting and specialty hiking.  A total of $3,570.50 has been given out in scholarships this year to get youth on the waters and in the woods.

After only a few hours kayaking on the rivers or geocaching for a treasure, youth develop new recreational interests and skills. They learn about themselves and their roles and in the community, build self-confidence and improve peer dynamics. In addition to gaining a better appreciation for these fun and exciting opportunities, participants foster a greater understanding of environmental issues and ethics.

The programs introduce participants involved in a variety of community organizations to what may very well be their first time looking at the environment and nature as a valuable resource. YOAP, comprised of youth ages 10 to 17, has served members of Big Brothers Big Sisters, Carnegie Science Center's Mission Discovery Program, City High Charter High School, Hazelwood YMCA Little Darlings, Hilltop Health Ministries, Peabody High School's Kidz-E-Festival, Pittsburgh Project and more.

To register a group for a YOAP program, contact Jeremiah Morrison, Program Coordinator, at 412.255.0564 ext. 33 or email at jmorrison@ventureoutdoors.org

VO Activity Spotlight

Saturday, November 10th
Day Trek
Spend a day in the woods, explore a trail, get some exercise and discover something new about the world all around us. Day Treks vary in length and difficulty, but all are designed to showcase some of the best hiking in western Pennsylvania.
Mt. Davis
10:00 AM - 4:00 PM
$5.00 member, $10.00 non-member
Saturday, November 10th
Winter Warmer Beer Hike
As the days get colder and darker, we'll focus on winter dark beers - porters, stouts and winter seasonals - to ward off the chill. These hearty brews, accompanied by warm breads and snacks, will take the chill off after our 3 to 4 mile stroll through the winter woods. Don't be afraid of the dark!
Boyce Park
3:00 PM - 7:00 PM
$25.00 member, $40.00 non-member
Saturday, November 17th
Holiday Pie Hike
It's that time of year and the holiday pies are getting ready to go in the oven. Before you bake, join us for a few delectable pie samples prepared by Mary Brenholts. The samples you will indulge in include, but are not limited to, Sweet Potato Pie, Pumpkin Pie, and Lemon Pie, with fresh ingredients from the East End Food Co-op. We will also head out for a short hike in South Park before the pie-tasting to get our bellies rumbling.
South Park
11:00 AM - 3:00 PM
$12.00 member, $20.00 non-member

Looking for a unique gift idea this holiday season?

This holiday season, Venture Outdoors Memberships will be available for purchase as gifts or as personal memberships/renewals.

10) A VO Membership (used properly) helps to keep you fit. A big box of candy does not.
9) This way, you know your gift won’t be re-gifted.
8) A VO Membership fits wonderfully inside a stocking.
7) No pesky gift-wrapping necessary - need we say more??
6) No worrying about size or color preferences.
5) Nana can send a VO Membership instead of those slipper-socks she sends year after year.
4) You don’t have to battle the Black Friday shopping crowd to get a great deal on one.
3) You can knock out an entire household’s gifts in about five minutes!
2) A VO Membership gets more use in a year than a sweater with snowmen all over it. (But does it last longer than Auntie Pearl’s fruitcake?)
1) Gives you a jump-start on the New Year’s Resolution to try more outdoor activities.  (Because we know that’s at the top of everyone’s list!)

To join, visit http://www.ventureoutdoors.org/givemembership.asp or call Becca at 412-255-0564 x 29.
