Trail Tales

Snowshoeing by Robert Isenberg

As we strapped on our snowshoes, adjusting the buckles and straps, I realized that, yes, snowshoeing does look silly. The shoes looked like aluminum beaver tails; with each step, I’d lift my foot out of the grass, letting the flat shoe dangle and flap against my boot. Walking felt awkward and imbalanced; I felt like a toddler, managing to stand but anxious about falling over. Somehow I’d expected to just strap on my snowshoes and go.
None of us looked all that confident. Twenty or so people had arrived to take a class in basic snowshoeing. They had driven to this obscure field in Natrona, following their dream of trudging around on the ice. Now we meandered through the cold air, making paths and then crossing them, navigating in circles and figure-eights. Inevitably, one woman fell over – quietly tumbling onto her side like a short Christmas tree. Everybody laughed, including the woman. We laughed because we knew that we could be next.

Why? No snow.

Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato recently announced the County Parks Action Plan, a major new initiative to enhance the quality of our nine regional parks. To assist in this process, we are seeking input from our residents to guide us in our decisions so that the final proposal we submit reflects the actual needs, desires, and goals of our community members.
