Big Savage Tunnel Ride on the Great Allegheny Passage

Saturday, August 30, 2014

The Big Savage Tunnel may be the coolest attraction along the GAP. The old railroad tunnel cuts 3,294 feet through Big Savage Mountain near the Pennsylvania-Maryland border. We’re going to start in Meyersdale and ride through the tunnel on the 32-mile round trip ride to Frostburg, MD. Lunch will be on your own in Frostburg, with a listing of bike-friendly restaurants provided. The trip will end upon our return to Meyersdale after a slight uphill incline. All are welcome to stay and explore the town. Bike rentals are not included in the fee and are not available to rent in Meyersdale, so please bring your own bike.

Lewis & Clark History Paddle

Sunday, August 31, 2014

Did you know that the Lewis & Clark expedition started in Pittsburgh? 211 years ago, Captain Meriwether Lewis spent 6 frustrating weeks in the Pittsburgh area overseeing the construction of his flag ship keel boat which had it's maiden voyage on August 31st, 1803. Lewis describes how he made a landing that day on Brunot's Island in Pittsburgh's West End and experienced the first of many near disasters when a civilian was wounded during a demonstration of his now famous air rifle. Join local historian and national Lewis and Clark reenactor, John McNulty, in a paddle around this historic site and learn more about Western Pennsylvania'a role in this fascinating chapter of our history. Paddling experience is necessary for this outing.
