OUTDOOR LEADERSHIP WEEKEND TEACHES VITAL SKILLS
Venture Outdoors holds Outdoor Leadership Weekend for prospective community
leaders
(Pittsburgh, PA – September 19, 2007) - From Friday evening, October 5
through Sunday October 7, Venture Outdoors will hold a course instructing anyone
in the community on the mechanics of leadership.
Promoting safety, fun and the ability to effectively lead groups through
programs, the Outdoor Leadership Weekend will instruct participants on how to
improve their leadership skills for the benefit of their peers, family and
community.
This weekend will benefit any group leader, regardless of whether you will be
leading a group outdoors.
Venture Outdoors offers the Outdoor Leadership Weekend periodically throughout
the year. The training instructs prospective leaders on group dynamics, trip
planning, Leave-No-Trace ethics, accident scene management and teaching skills,
etc. Material is covered in and out of the classroom with the addition of
practical, role-playing scenarios.
Venture Outdoors leaders are well-trained, active individuals who take care to
engage others safely in healthy and enjoyable programs. They volunteer for the
organization, leading programs such as kayaking, biking and hiking, in order to
take part in the effort to fulfill a mission of gaining a greater regional
appreciation of the area's natural resources. All volunteers of Venture Outdoors
programs are required to complete the Outdoor Leadership Weekend in order to
lead any activities.
The leadership training will be held at Crooked Creek Environmental Learning
Center, starting at 8 p.m. Friday and ending at 4 p.m. Sunday. The cost is $35
for members and $50 for non-members. The fee includes two breakfasts, two
lunches and one dinner. Camping is free; lodging is $15 extra. A manual is
included in the fee.Venture Outdoors, a nonprofit organization, seeks to
transform the Pittsburgh region into a place where
the outdoors is an integral part of our culture, our identity and our lifestyle.
Venture Outdoors does this by
increasing participation in outdoor recreational activity. This in turn creates
a sense of community among
participants, an increased awareness of the region's excellent quality of life,
and a better understanding of
and a deeper appreciation for the environment and wilderness among the residents
