EveryBody Outdoors

People of every size, shape, and weight deserve the chance to experience the amazing benefits of time spent outdoors with others. Venture Outdoors welcomes active folks in larger bodies to get outside this year through its series of size-friendly outings, at a pace that is safe and comfortable for each person. Each trip listing will give you the information you need to decide if the outing is right for you: active time and pace, general route, and terrain, and if any experience is needed. You can look forward to a variety of monthly activities throughout the year, all in a positive and welcoming atmosphere in which we will celebrate all shapes and sizes. Join us for one outing, join us for all. This is where you belong.

Mellon Park Art and History Hike

Along 5th Avenue on Pittsburgh historic East End sits Mellon Park, a true oasis amid the city. Mellon Park is a garden of delights; this greenspace offers multiple recreational facilities and beautiful walking trails. Originally owned by Richard Beatty Mellon, this land was used for the philanthropist’s mansion but was eventually torn down and created into the park the community knows and loves. Most famously, Mellon Park contains its recently completed Walled Garden, which was constructed from part of the remains of the previous owner’s mansion. We will explore Mellon Park and the Walled Garden as well as some glorious statuary and monuments throughout the grounds.

This will be an urban walk with an emphasis on the urban.  Be prepared to travel at a moderate but steady pace approximately 2 miles over a mix of paved and trail surfaces, with some small natural inclines along the hills of this Shadyside. We will make frequent stops at specific sites as well as to chat and look around. You can expect an active time of 90—120 minutes, dependent on group speed and needs.

Sturdy and supportive walking shoes are essential, and water for hydration is recommended. Sun hats and sun block are always smart choices. Check the weather and dress appropriately for the day. Hiking poles should not be necessary.

If cost is a barrier to your participation, please email alyssa@ventureoutdoors.org.
