EveryBody Outdoors Series: You Belong Here
People of every size, shape, and weight deserve the chance to experience the amazing benefits of time spent outdoors with others. Venture Outdoors welcomes active folks in larger bodies to get outside this year through its series of size-friendly outings, at a pace that is safe and comfortable for each person. Each trip listing will give you the information you need to decide if the outing is right for you: active time and pace, general route and terrain, and if any experience is needed. You can look forward to a variety of monthly activities throughout the year, all in a positive and welcoming atmosphere in which we will celebrate all shapes and sizes. Join us for one outing, join us for all. This is where you belong.
North Side Art Hike
Welcome to the Mexican War Streets, the vibrant historic area in the city’s North Side that is home to Allegheny Commons Park. Learn some of the history of the area on this urban hike, while exploring the bountiful public art for which it is known. We will also walk through part of Allegheny Commons Park. We will start and end at Randyland, meeting at the corner of Jacksonia and Arch Streets. Expect to cover 2 – 3 miles over about 90 active minutes at a moderate pace. There will be mostly sidewalks, city streets, and a minimum of well-packed gravel trails around the park.
February in Pittsburgh is cold, so be sure to dress appropriately – it’s better to peel off a layer than to be too cold. Wear supportive walking shoes and bring water to stay hydrated. We will be tackling one larger hill, starting at North Avenue, and heading up Federal Street for a few blocks. Our hill pace will always be slow and steady. We can also visit a local coffee shop if members of the group would like to buy a warm beverage.
