Notable Near Misses of Pittsburgh’s Past – An Accidental History Guided Bike & Hike

Join us on a combined bike and walking excursion on Pittsburgh riverfront trails, sidewalks and bridges to scenic overlooks, led by Fred Zelt! Hear about six times from the 1750’s to 1970’s when nobody got hurt in spite of unique combinations of stupidity, luck and malice. We will cycle less than 10 miles on fairly flat riverfront trails with ramps to and from two bridge sidewalks that are part of our route. The excursion cost covers our fares on the Duquesne Incline to vistas overlooking sites of significant “Oops” moments in Pittsburgh history. We will walk about half a mile on the scenic Grandview Avenue sidewalk at the top of the Incline. Bicycle helmets and bike lights are required.

A few days before the excursion we will send those who have registered an email with more information about the path we will be cycling, what to bring and exactly when and where to meet at the start. This is an excursion with a moderate level of difficulty. Crossing bridges on sidewalks high above the Monongahela River is part of the excursion, which may not be appropriate for people who are especially sensitive to heights. This trip is offered in partnership with Earth Science Excursions, LLC.
