Venture Outdoors’ fishing group known as the TriAnglers meet Wednesdays around lunch time on the Allegheny River’s North Shore by PNC Park. The group fishes with a beautiful view of Pittsburgh’s downtown with the Point and Mt. Washington in the background.
The Pirates were playing on the day I joined the TriAnglers, and the shoreline was lively and bustling as we fished near the Roberto Clemente (6th St.) bridge. A handful of experienced fishers gather here each week to enjoy some time in the sun and haul in a few fish from the river, which they release after catching. They were there not only to meet with friends, but to help others bait hooks and give me tips about how to best cast a line into the choppy waters of the river.
The group told me that they very much welcome inexperienced people and youth to take part in the program. Venture Outdoors provides the group with bait and all the necessary fishing gear, so participants can just show up. Using worms and minnows, the group caught two catfish that day.
