Hiking Toward A Haunting: Ghost Hunting

H.P. Lovecraft once said, “The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown”. Have you ever been alone in a quiet room and heard someone whisper your name? Maybe you were on a late-night walk through the woods, you see what could be a human-like figure standing still, looking back at you. It’s probably nothing you tell yourself. Then it moves. Perhaps your mind is just playing tricks on you, or maybe these are experiences of the paranormal. It’s in these situations when you make one of two decisions. Do you run and pretend like it didn’t happen? Or do you embrace that emotion we call fear and investigate these happenings to find out the truth behind the unknown world of the paranormal?
For me the answer has always been an easy one. I want to know what made that noise, I want to know if that dark figure that moved was truly a spirit or was it only my imagination. Dating back to my early days in middle school I have always been fascinated by the paranormal. I was always exploring the abandoned houses around the city or taking midnight strolls through the cemetery to try to contact the spirit world. I have had a handful of experiences that I cannot debunk as anything other than a paranormal experience.
It was only a couple of weeks ago in early October that I was visiting family in the infamous Gettysburg, Pennsylvania when I had my most recent encounter. I joined up with a team of other local investigators and explored what had been an old medical ward for the Union Army during the Civil War. Many soldiers as well as doctors and nurses lost their lives in this house. It was about 1:30 AM. I was sitting in the attic of the house with two fellow investigators. We were using a device called a “spirit box” which scans radio waves that spirits have been known to communicate through. I began asking questions in an attempt to communicate in some way with a spirit from the other side. What we heard was haunting…
Me: Is there anyone here in this room with us?
Unknown Voice (Female): Yes.
Me: My name is Ken; do you have a name?
Unknown Voice (Female): Inaudible name…
Me: Are you male or female?

Unknown Voice (Female): Girl.
Me: (I turned on my head lamp to check what I thought was something move.)
Unknown Voice (Male): Stop.
Another Investigator (Christina): (Confused that we now hear what we think is a male voice.) How many spirits are here with us?
Unknown Voice (Male): One.
Christina: Are you a male or female?
Unknown Voice (Male): Male.
Just then it felt as if the temperature dropped 20 degrees. What we heard next sent shivers down our spines…
Christina: Are you alone?
Unknown Voice (Male): Get. Out.
Me: Do you not want us up here anymore?
Unknown Voice (Male): No.

Christina: Do you want us to leave?
Unknown Voice (Male): (Very clearly, as if it was just one person talking to another.) GET OUT.
This spirit clearly did not want us around any longer. We did not ask another time and promptly left the attic. We are not sure why the spirit lied to us saying they were alone when we could clearly hear one female and one male voice. Could it be that once the male entity entered the attic the girl left? We’ll never know, but one thing we do know is that whatever spirit was there when we left, they did not want us there. It was a crazy experience to say the least and oh so much fun.
When it comes to the paranormal, some of us may be skeptics, some of us may believe. I don’t know what is real and what is not. The only thing I do know. We all fear the unknown.
