15 Questions with Kathi Radock, our Membership and Volunteer Manager

1. Briefly tell us about your background: where did you grow up, where did you go to school, and what brought you to Venture Outdoors?
I’m from Wexford, studied English & Film at the University of Pittsburgh, and started with Venture Outdoors as a volunteer about eight or so years ago.

2. Describe your role at Venture Outdoors in 10 words or less.
Encouraging people to support Venture Outdoors’ great work via Membership.

3. What does “getting outside” mean to you?
Enjoying nature while being active.

4. If you had to pick only one recreational activity to practice for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?
Biking – it’s affordable and can be used for both enjoyment and practicality.

5. What is the craziest thing you have done?
I’m inadvertently associated with the Starr Report. The online version includes screenshots of a website I created while in college as “evidence”!

6. What are your top five favorite outdoors/travel destinations?
Close to home: Frick Park. Not too far away: Ohiopyle and Presque Isle. Favorite local neighborhood to walk in: Regent Square. Non-active outdoor spot: The drive-in.

7. What is your favorite forest/camping snack?

8. Name three people in history (dead or alive) with whom you would want to take on a Venture Outdoors program of your choice.
Hillary Clinton, Rick Sebak, and Amy Poehler.

9. What is your favorite Venture Outdoors memory?
The time our caving guide from Laurel Caverns lost a tooth in the middle of telling a story and basically reacted with an “Oh, well” and a shrug.

10. Describe your dream Venture Outdoors program/outing.
I’ve always enjoyed the bike rides that incorporate some history, a scenic ride, and a stop for lunch.

11. What is the earliest memory you have of being outside?
Lots of exploring the woods near my house with friends.

12. What would the title of your autobiography be?
The MacGyver of Nonprofits

13. Any hidden talents?
I’m a pretty good picture framer.

14. What is your favorite song (or album) right now?
It’s obviously not new, but I’ve been back into Amy Winehouse’s “Back to Black” album for the past few months.

15. What is your biggest challenge nowadays?
Never-ending discovery of dog hair floating around my house.
