Lewis and Clark History Hike

Back in 2003, the longest reenactment in US history began in the nearby town of Elizabeth, Pa. to commemorate the bicentennial of the Lewis and Clark expedition.  Four years ago, Pittsburgh became the official trailhead of the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail as recognized by the National Park Service.  Find out how a group of volunteer advocates persuaded the federal government to extend the official trail to include the Ohio Valley and the positive effects that it is having for Southwest Pennsylvania.  John McNulty was a participant during the bicentennial expedition and subsequent effort to extend the LCNHT.  Join him as we climb to the West End Overlook using some of Pittsburgh’s most dramatic but little known city staircases, enjoying the views while learning about this important development for our region. We will meet at the West End Library at 10am and have a lunch break at the West End Overlook. This hike will cover about three miles and is considered modest to difficult given the steep terrain.
