Venture Outdoors Students on Saturday Light Brigade

Venture Outdoors provides kids different experiences outdoors, but did you know we also give kids the platform to talk about those experiences?

On December 21st Derrell and his brother Dre were given the opportunity to talk about their Venture Outdoors experiences on Saturday Light Brigade’s Youth Express program. Youth Express is a 24/7 internet radio service that features the work of Pittsburgh-area youth, including original writing, music, theater, journalism, and more. On Saturday mornings, Youth Express hosts Pittsburgh youth in the studio to mic-up and go on air live. It’s 100% youth, 100% of the time.

This program is a part of Saturday Light Brigade (SLB), a community-focused radio station that started in 1978. Founded to spread ideas and reflections of local individuals, SLB shows how radio pushes us to use language and communication skills in conjunction with imagination, creativity, and critical thinking.

Derrell, or DJ, is a senior at City High and completed his internship with Venture Outdoors in the spring of 2019. He worked with the organization everyday from 1:30-4:30 for a trimester. During his internship, DJ entered programming data, helped organize community events, prepared materials for countless youth programs, and was a kayak attendant at Kayak Pittsburgh. Before Venture Outdoors, he was thinking about joining the Marines after high school – now he is interested in the environmental field.

His little brother, Dre, is in 5th grade at Sunnyside. He had the opportunity to participate in a few Venture Outdoors activities, including participating in the Kayak with the Cops event with his big brother. Dre’s favorite outdoor activity is playing football with friends.

Thanks to SLB and Youth Express for providing DJ and Dre this opportunity!
